The next joint conference of the VAAM specialist group “Biology and Biotechnology of Fungi” and the Gene AG “Fungal Genetics” of the Society for Genetics will take place next year from 11-13.09.2024 at the CAU in Kiel. We are very pleased to welcome internationally renowned scientists from the USA, Taiwan and other European countries as keynote speakers at the fjord. You can expect numerous current lectures from the field of biotechnology and molecular genetics of fungi. We especially encourage interested students to participate! Make a note of the date!

The GfG would like to draw your attention to another event: Next summer, the 23rd International Congress of Genetics will take place in Melbourne (Australia). Registration is already open.
The Society for Genetics is pleased to endow a poster award to recognize the best scientific presentation at the upcoming Plant Science Student Conference (PSSC2023). The Plant Science Student Conference (PSSC) will take place on July 3 and 4, 2023 in Gatersleben (Seeland) and offers (PhD) students the opportunity to present their own projects. Workshops will be offered on the topics: “How to get a scientific paper”, “Seeding the future” and “How plants make complex alkaloids”. Keynote speeches are also planned by Wilma van Esse and Elliot Heffner, among others. The event is primarily intended to bring together prospective researchers from the Cluster of Excellence in Plant Science (CEPLAS University of Düsseldorf), the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB Halle) and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK Gatersleben). Places still available after the registration deadline (April 3) will be made available to all students in the community in a further registration phase.
Annual Meeting of the Society for Genetics 2022
The genetically interested research community came together in April to discuss current developments in the field under the motto “Genetics of Inflammation and Infection”. This year's conference - organized by Professor Reinhard Köster from TU Braunschweig - took place online and aimed to shed light on fundamental genetic mechanisms of inflammation and infection processes. In eight plenary sessions, 25 lectures were offered on the topics of immunity, inflammasomes, neuronal inflammatory processes and bacterial, viral and fungal infections, impressively demonstrating the diversity and breadth of the subject area. Despite the online format, the conference was exciting and interactive with lively professional exchange. The more than 250 participants enjoyed presentations by international experts from Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, France and Brazil. In addition to renowned lecturers, young scientists were also given the opportunity to present and discuss their research findings in each session. The lecture by Dr. Daniela Nordzieke entitled “Hyphal fusion and autophagy enable proper conidiation and symptom development on maize leaves by Colletotrichum graminicola” was particularly well received. The young scientist from Göttingen received the prize for the best young scientist lecture. A particular highlight of the conference was the inspiring presentation by Prof. Dr. Ulla Bonas from the University of Halle-Wittenberg, who was awarded the Max Delbrück Prize. Her lecture entitled “How bacterial plant pathogens manipulate the host” offered a very exciting insight into her impressive scientific career, and not just from a technical perspective.
The joint conference “Molecular Biology of Fungi 2022” of the VAAM Division “Biology and Biotechnology of Fungi” and the Gen AG of the Society for Genetics “Genetics of Fungi” took place from September 7-9, 2022 at the TU Kaiserslautern. The thematically diverse event also attracted numerous young scientists, who had the opportunity to present and discuss their results in extensive poster sessions. The Society for Genetics awarded prizes to the best posters in each of the three categories: Multicellular development, Sensing and Signaling and Biotechnology.
The prize in the “Multicellular Development” category went to Jan Breuer from the University of Bochum for his poster entitled “Analyzing the impact of the histone chaperone ASF1 on sexual development and the chromatin landscape in the ascomycete Sordaria macrospora”.
In the “Sensing and Signaling” category, the poster by Xiaodi Hu (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) entitled “Interaction of Arthrobotrys flagrans with Caenorhabditis elegans involves G-protein dependent signaling” was awarded.
Yuxin Zhang from the Technical University of Munich was awarded the prize in the “Biotechnology” category for his poster “Characterize CLR-3 as a key factor in the cross-talk between cellulose and hemicellulose signaling in N. crassa”. All prize winners received 150 euros in prize money, which was donated by the GenAG of the Society for Genetics “Genetics of Fungi”.
